TAXI MEDICALS FAQ

Please reach us at admin@d4youdrivermedicals.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We understand that you may feel nervous about your taxi medical examination. Our doctors are here to make the whole experience a breeze. Here's some handy advice to make your medical go well:

  1. Don't forget your glasses along with your prescription.
  2. Bring a detailed record of your regular medications and their doses.
  3. Arrive early to relax. Sip some water, take deep breaths, have some biscuits and get your zen on. If you're on blood pressure meds, don't forget to take them as prescribed.
  4. Bring your full medical records
  5. Bring a copy of ID

During your taxi medical, determining your fitness may not be as straightforward if you have a condition that does not meet Group 2 guidelines for driving, or needs extra tests. For example, if you have previous medical history relating to your heart, an Echocardiogram (ECG) might be necessary, leading to extra checks and time. Just a heads up: any additional tests will tap into your wallet. Our appointment doesn't come with an all-inclusive test package, sadly.

Remember, we've got your back and we'll make it as smooth as a freshly tarmacked road. Cheers!

To ensure a smooth process, we strongly advise checking who can complete your medical with your Local Authority first. They hold the power to decide who can conduct your medical, not the DVLA. Most Local Authorities allow any GMC registered doctor to perform Taxi Medicals provided they have either a summary or the full medical records, but some insist on the driver's own General Practitioner. Contact your local authority for specific information before booking your appointment with us.

Furthermore, certain Local Authorities require the examiner to access your complete medical records. You may need to request this from your GP surgery ahead of time.

If your local authority confirms to you that any doctor who has access to your medical records can complete your medical [not just your GP or a GP in your registered GP surgery] we can happily complete this for you at any one of our locations. We complete taxi medicals at all our locations including Croydon, Dartford, Reading, Heathrow and Richmond.

Ask your GP for the following:

I am applying for a TFL/PCO license and for this, I am undergoing a TFL PCO medical with a private medical company.

To complete this, I am requesting my full medical record under Section 45 of the Data Protection Act 2018.

I would like the full medical record which shows all my previous consultations as well as any referrals, discharge letters and all correspondence and medical records available.

It must be the full medical record, it cannot be a medical summary and it cannot just show the last three most recent consultations. I would appreciate it if you could kindly email it to me in PDF form.

A  taxi medical is completed using your local authority's medical form, which you will kindly need to bring to your appointment. Our friendly doctors will:

  • test your eye sight [this is included in the cost of the taxi driver medical]
  • blood pressure test
  • medical questions covering all domains required when assessing at Group 2 Standards

The medical will take approximately 15-30 minutes. Longer if you stop for a chat and a biscuit.

To obtain the correct form for a taxi medical, visit your local authority council's website and search for "applying for taxi license", "taxi medical" or "becoming a taxi driver."

There, you'll find comprehensive information about the entire process, including details on who can conduct your medical (whether it must be your registered GP or not) and the specific form that needs to be filled out.

Remember to bring a copy of the required form to your appointment for completion. Your council's website is your key to all the vital information you need.

Send your completed forms directly to your council. Visit their website for submission instructions. Let the adventure begin!

The taxi medical routine varies with each local authority. To stay in the know, go over to your local authority website for the details on how frequently you'll need to have a taxi medical. Get your info right from the source!

Don't leave home for your appointment without these essentials:

  1. If you wear them, glasses and their prescription
  2. A handy list of your meds and dosages
  3. Your trusty passport or driving license
  4. Full medical records or summary records from your GP, depending on what the council requires.
  5. The medical form that your local authority uses for medicals - this needs to be printed out and provided at the appointment, otherwise we cannot complete the medical.
  6. Some local authorities have additional requirements for things you need to bring, such as bank statements and proof of address. Please check with your local authority if there is anything else you need to bring to your appointment!
