HGV/PCV LORRY MEDICALS FAQ

Please reach us at admin@d4youdrivermedicals.co.uk or call/text us on 07503 954 652 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We understand that you may feel nervous about your HGV medical examination. Our doctor is here to make the whole experience a breeze. Here's some handy advice to help make your medical go well:

  1. Don't forget your glasses along with your prescription.
  2. Bring a detailed record of your regular medications and their doses.
  3. Bring your D4 form [you can either download this online, or the DVLA will have sent you it in the post]
  4. Arrive early to relax. Sip some water, take deep breaths, have some biscuits and get your zen on. If you're on blood pressure meds, don't forget to take them as prescribed.

If you're going for your first HGV license, buckle up because you'll need to do a HGV medical exam (also known as a lorry medical or D4 medical).

Don't worry, though, you won't have to repeat the medical until you hit the age of 45—unless, of course, you've had any major changes in your medical history. In that case, make sure to inform the DVLA about the updates, and they'll let you know if you need to come back to us for another medical.

Once you hit the fabulous age of 45, you'll need to saddle up for a HGV medical assessment every five years. And if you're lucky enough to reach the golden age of 65, get ready for an annual HGV medical.

Good news, my friend! You can breathe a sigh of relief because you only have to do one initial medical exam before the ripe age of 45—unless, of course, there have been some changes in your medical history. In that case, make sure to spill the beans to the DVLA and let them decide if you need to have another medical.

Once you hit the fabulous age of 45, it's time to mark your calendar because you'll need to face the HGV medical assessment every five years. Just think of it as a thrilling reunion with your friends at D4YOU.

And if you're lucky enough to celebrate the glorious age of 65, get ready for an annual HGV medical showdown. Yep, you heard that right—every single year, my friend.

The medical will take approximately 15 minutes. Longer if you stop for a chat and a biscuit.

Our charming doctors will test your eyesight, check your blood pressure, and ask medical questions about your history, signs and symptoms that cover the domains required by the DVLA / Group 2 Driving Standards.

Alright, let's break it down for you—HGV medical forms, the D2 and D4 forms, and all that jazz.

When it comes to your HGV medical, the star of the show is the D4 form. To get your hands on this, you have a couple of options. You can head on over to one of those participating post offices, where they'll gladly hand it over to you. Alternatively, you can embrace the digital age and download the form here.

Oh, and let's not forget about the D2 form. It's like the trusty sidekick to the D4 form. You take the lead and fill out the D2 form yourself.

Ah, the great voyage of the D2 and D4 forms! You'll be pleased to know that they have a one-way ticket to their final destination—the DVLA in Swansea. Godspeed, dear forms, as you make your way to the DVLA in Swansea.

According to the DVLA website, they've set their sights on getting back to you within a three-week timeframe once you've bravely submitted your form.  If you have health issues or further checks need to be conducted, the process may take more than 3 weeks. To save yourself from a long wait wait, our friendly advice is to get that medical ball rolling early.

Lorry drivers have a medical check known as the HGV medical, lorry medical,D4 Medical or LCV medical. Confusing, huh?

But they all mean the same thing: undergoing a medical completed on a form called the D4 form. Bottom line? Our doctor will use this to complete your medical and then you send it off to the DVLA. Simple as that!

You can book a medical here

Sorry, no shortcuts! As a first-time applicant, a HGV medical is a must before you can embark on your lorry-driving adventure, as per DVLA guidance. Safety first, my friend!

Don't leave home for your appointment without these essentials:

  1. If you wear them, glasses and their prescription
  2. A handy list of your meds and dosages
  3. Your trusty passport or driving license
  4. If you're going for a taxi or private hire medical, fetch those full medical records from your GP. No record, no ride!

NHS GPs are swamped and as such, may not have capacity to conduct D4 DVLA medicals. This is because D4 DVLA medicals are considered non NHS work.

Any GMC doctor with full registration can complete the medical.

Driver medical providers complete your DVLA medical, however don't play driver medical roulette. We've completed thousands of driver medicals, with expert knowledge and answers to all your burning questions.

D2 form: You fill it out to get your provisional license, like a driver's permission slip.

D4 form: It's the medical application form. This is completed as part of our doctor completing your medical assessment. Lucky for you, we're experienced in completing D4 medicals. Book an appointment and leave the paperwork to us!

A D4 medical usually takes about 15 minutes. Longer if you stop for a chat and biscuit.

Only a fully registered GMC registered doctor can complete this medical, and as per DVLA and it doesn't have to be your GP. But beware, amigo! Choosing an inexperienced doctor or provider could lead to form fumbles and frustrating delays.

Some providers hire a mix of newbie and seasoned doctors for their clinics, leaving you guessing which you're gonna get. But fear not! Our GMC registered doctor is experienced in driver medicals.

Opticians can handle the vision test, but they can't do the whole D4 form. Good news though, we've got you covered! Our price includes the vision assessment, so no need to hit up the optician separately. We'll handle the whole thing for you!

Our competitive price is just £45, and we include the eye test too!

 You've got options, my friend:

  • Grab it online from here
  • Swing by participating post offices to snatch one
  • Visit the dvla.gov link provided here to download it or request a delivery: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/d4-medical-examiner-report-for-a-lorry-or-bus-driving-licence

Not every post office, my friend. Only participating post offices carry them.

You've got a four-month deadline from the day you got your form filled out, my friend. If you miss it, the DVLA might give it the cold shoulder, and you'll have to go through the medical exam all over again.
