What is an ML5 Medical Certificate?

An ML5 medical certificate is a health assessment that determines if you are fit to perform your duties at sea. This medical evaluation is designed to ensure that individuals working on certain types of vessels have the physical capability and overall health required for their roles.

The assessment includes a thorough examination of your medical history, eyesight, hearing, and physical fitness.

Who Needs an ML5 Medical?

You will need an ML5 medical certificate if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • Master of a Passenger Ship (Class IV or V): If you are the master of a passenger ship that does not go to sea, you must have an ML5 certificate to verify your fitness for this responsibility.
  • Master of a Commercial Vessel: Masters of commercial vessels that do not go to sea are also required to have this certification.
  • Small Commercial Vessel Crew: If you are the master or a crew member of a small commercial vessel operating within Area Category 2 to 6 (no more than 60 miles from a safe haven), an ML5 medical certificate is necessary.
  • Domestic Passenger Ship Crew: Crew members, including catering staff, who normally work on domestic passenger ships (Class VI or VIA) that go to sea, need an ML5 medical to ensure they are fit for their roles.

Why is an ML5 Medical Needed?

The primary purpose of the ML5 medical is to ensure that those working at sea are medically fit to handle the demands of their job.

This is vital for maintaining safety standards and preventing health-related incidents that could jeopardize both the individual and the vessel's operation. By obtaining an ML5 medical certificate, you demonstrate your commitment to upholding these safety standards and ensuring a secure working environment at sea, as well as the ML5 being a requirement for certain roles [see above].

After the age of 65, you will require a ML5 Seafarer Medical every year.

What does the ML5 Seafarer Medical Involve?

  1. The ML5 medical examination is designed to be thorough yet straightforward, covering several key aspects of an individual's health. Here's what to expect during the process:

  1. Medical History Review: The doctor will review your medical history, including any past or existing conditions, symptoms, medications, and previous surgeries. This helps identify any potential issues that may affect your ability to work safely at sea.

2. Physical Examination: The physical exam includes checking your vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and general physical condition. Specific tests may include blood pressure measurement, vision assessment including assessment of visual acuity and colour vision, and assessments for musculoskeletal issues.

Does it have to be my GP that ML5 Seafarer Medical?

Your ML5 Seafarer Medical must be completed by a GMC registered doctor. The doctor does not have to be your GP. It is important to choose a doctor who has experience in conducting ML5 Seafarer Medicals, as well as having current full GMC registration.

What do I need to bring to my ML5 Seafarer Medical?

  • A form of ID: either your passport or driving license

  • A printed copy of the ML5 Seafarer Form

  • If you wear glasses, please bring these along with the optical prescription from your optician. If you wear contact lenses, we recommend that you do not wear these to the appointment and wear glasses instead, as we will initially need to test your vision without contact lenses or glasses.

  • If you take any medications, or have any health conditions, we recommend you ask your GP surgery to print out, or email you a copy of your medical summary record.

  • If you are under specialist hospital care [i.e. you have previously, or currently, are under a specialist and have had hospital admissions or outpatient appointments] we recommend you ask your GP surgery to print out any outpatient letters or medical records relating to your condition. The more information that is provided, the more thoroughly we can complete your ML5 medical.

Will my ML5 Seafarer Certificate be issue on the same day?

Certification: If you meet all the required health standards, the doctor will issue an ML5 certificate which involves completing the certificate section on the ML5 form.

This certificate confirms that you are fit for duty and can safely perform your role on board.

Why the ML5 Seafarer Medical is Important

The importance of the ML5 seafarer medical cannot be overstated. Here are several reasons why it is a vital requirement in the maritime industry:

  1. Ensuring Safety: The primary goal of the ML5 medical is to ensure that seafarers are fit to perform their duties safely. This is crucial for preventing accidents and incidents that could arise from medical issues.

2. Protecting Health: Regular medical examinations help in early detection of health issues that could worsen over time. By addressing these issues promptly, seafarers can maintain better overall health and well-being.

3. Compliance with Regulations: The maritime industry is heavily regulated to ensure the safety of all involved. The ML5 medical is a legal requirement for certain roles, ensuring compliance with national and international maritime laws.

How Can I Find a Doctor for the ML5 Medical?

You can find a doctor authorized to conduct ML5 medical exams through maritime authorities, maritime training centers, word of mouth recommendations or by checking with your employer.

It's important to ensure the doctor is recognized and holds registration with the relevant regulatory body.
